Eager volunteers: Members of the UiTM choir raising their hands after their presentation at the Rakan Cop launch for tertiary institutions in Shah Alam yesterday.

SHAH ALAM: Some 300,000 university students and lecturers will become the eyes and ears of the police under Rakan Cop.

The campus community is the largest enrolment for Rakan Cop to date, said Inspector-General of Police Tan Sri Musa Hassan.

In welcoming the latest batch of volunteers, the police chief said it was time to rattle the criminals.

“Will the large membership in Rakan Cop be significant? Yes.

“Criminals are only a small group living with other members in the community. If they know many people are Rakan Cop volunteers, I am sure they will not be as daring because many pairs of eyes are watching,” said Musa at the national-level Rakan Cop launch for tertiary institutions held at the UiTM stadium here yesterday. The guest of honour was Higher Education Minister Datuk Mustapa Mohamed.

Musa said Rakan Cop volunteers could help provide information on crime or report about any suspicious activities in their communities.

“If you happen to witness a crime, write down the number of the getaway vehicle or describe the faces of the criminals.

“Information given to us is confidential, a volunteer does not even have to leave his or her real name. They will also not be asked to testify in court,” Musa added.

He said Rakan Cop volunteers could also conduct a citizen’s arrest.
Musa said the university students were an ideal volunteer group because they were familiar with communication tools such as handphones, SMS, MMS and e-mails.
